HMS Diadem
HMS Diadem

the diary of signalman John Emrys Williams

John (Jock?) Murphy from Glasgow

Darren McDonald wrote to me from Wrexham on the 3rd of September 2009 to say:

"My grandfather served on HMS Diadem. He is very vague on what his job was and is getting on in years. I would like to know if any of his shipmates are still about. His name is John Murphy from Glasgow. He has told a few funny stories like when he was locked in the engine room when a torpedo just missed. He laughs now, but I don’t think it would have been funny at the time. Thanks for your input and if you ever do come across any stories or old comrades that are still knocking round would be good to let him know."

Sadly, I had a follow-up email from Darren on the 10th of January 2013 saying:

"My grandfather served on HMS DIADEM he never talked about his time on board her and sadly he passed away on the 22nd of December 2012 and I wish to find out as much as I can about his time on there and if any other members are still around. His name was John Murphy from Glasgow, possibly known as Jock Murphy. If anyone can remember him as much info would be appreciated."
