60000 storytellers

Wow, I’ve just been reading about the Singapore International Storytelling Festival that’s going on this week. 60,000 storytellers are expected to attend. I’m struggling to imagine that many people all coming together for a storytelling festival. Fantastic!
Digital storytelling is on the programme this year and Denise Atchley is taking part. I’ll never forget Denise’s speech at our 2003 Digital Storytelling Conference here at BBC Wales in Cardiff. From the platform, she presented an unfinished digital story made by her late husband Dana in which she filled in the gaps live. It was incredibly moving. The ingternational digital storytelling community of course owes a huge debt to Dana and Denise.

If you’re one of the 60,000 in Singapore this week, be sure not to miss Denise’s presentation.

As far as I know, the National Book Development Council of Singapore (http://bookcouncil.sg/_storytelling/storytelling_introduction.php) organised the first Storytelling Festival in 2006 — that is, traditional storytelling without the “digital”.

The first digital storytelling workshop was offered at the second (traditional) storytelling festival in 2007. It was one of the many activities offered at the traditional storytelling event.

Denise Atchley (wife of the late Dana Atchley, aka the father of digital storytelling) facilitated the workshop. It was there that Aurelia and I “got infected” by digital storytelling. It was through Denise’s eyes that we met Dana – his passion for storytelling and his genius.

Digital storytelling is still at its embryonic stages in Singapore. The first Asian Digital Storytelling Congress was held in 2008. Aurelia and I were volunteer directors of the second DS in 2010. Barrie Stephenson of Digistories (http://digistories.co.uk/) was our keynote speaker.
